Electrical safety training in Abilene, TX

Abilene is home to Crusoe's 1.2 GW AI data center campus, built for Oracle and OpenAI, alongside Dyess Air Force Base and a long West Texas manufacturing base. We train the electricians and technicians working across them, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Abilene on request.

Private employers in Texas are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Texas electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Abilene crews

Traveling crews, one standard.

Electricians on large West Texas projects come from all over the country, with very different training. One NFPA 70E class at the start of a project puts everyone on the same procedures and permit.

On-site generation.

The campus pairs its ERCOT connection with natural gas turbines for backup. Generation-class switchgear and gen-tie connections inside the fence need their own isolation and switching procedures.

Wind, dust and heat.

Wind farms and outdoor substations around Abilene expose crews to high wind, dust and summer heat. Arc-rated PPE has to work in those conditions, and we address the tradeoffs directly.

Distance from help.

Rural substations and wind sites can be a long drive from emergency care. We spend extra time on emergency response planning for electrical injuries at remote sites.

Texas: what applies to Abilene crews

Enforcement: federal OSHA

Texas has no OSHA state plan, so private employers in Abilene are covered by federal OSHA. City of Abilene and Abilene ISD employees are public workers and outside OSHA coverage.

Licensing: TDLR

TDLR licenses Texas electricians statewide, including journeyman lineman and journeyman industrial licenses. Traveling electricians from other states need a TDLR license to do electrical work here.

Where NFPA 70E fits

NFPA 70E is a consensus standard. Employers and OSHA inspectors use it to show how the electrical requirements in 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K are met, and OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause for recognized hazards.

Abilene's electrical work environment

Abilene sits about 150 miles west of Fort Worth on I-20. For decades its economy rested on Dyess Air Force Base, three universities and Hendrick Health. Dyess is home to the 7th Bomb Wing's B-1B Lancers and the 317th Airlift Wing's C-130Js.

In 2024 Crusoe began building an eight-building data center campus on the Lancium Clean Campus. The first two buildings went live in September 2025, running Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for OpenAI, and the final building topped out in November 2025. The full site covers about 1,100 acres.

At its peak, more than 6,400 construction workers were on site each day, many of them on traveling crews. The permanent operations staff now inherits high-density racks, large electrical rooms and on-site gas turbines.

Power

AEP Texas and West Texas power

AEP Texas delivers power in Abilene, and customers buy energy from retail electric providers. This is wind country: the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center, 735 MW of nameplate capacity, sits in Taylor and Nolan counties.

The Crusoe campus connects directly to the ERCOT grid and draws mainly on the region's renewable supply, with GE Vernova natural gas turbines replacing diesel generators for backup (Oracle and OpenAI, 2025). New transmission lines and substation upgrades are planned to deliver its load. That brings utility-scale switching and generation work inside the city limits.

Questions from Abilene employers

Do you have a scheduled class in Abilene?
Not on a fixed calendar. In-person classes in Abilene are set up on request. Tell us how many people you have and roughly when, and we will come back with a date and a written quote. If your group is large enough, the class runs at your own facility.
Can you train crews on the data center campus during construction?
Yes. Tell us the shift pattern, site access rules and headcount, and we schedule the class around the work. We can combine crews from several contractors on the same campus into one class.
Our traveling electricians are licensed in other states. Is that enough?
No. Electrical work in Texas requires a TDLR license, and neither a Texas nor an out-of-state license makes someone qualified under NFPA 70E. The employer has to train workers on the specific equipment and hazards and document it.
Do you travel to Abilene for onsite classes?
Yes. We deliver onsite anywhere in the Abilene area, from the data center campus to plants and wind sites in the surrounding counties.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
