In-person · Birmingham, ALElectrical safety training in Birmingham, AL
Birmingham still melts steel in electric arc furnaces, runs the state's largest employer at UAB and now has a 1.2 GW data center campus approved in Bessemer. We train the electrical crews who keep those operations running, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Birmingham when you ask.
Private employers in Alabama are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Alabama electrical safety training requirements →

Four ways to train your Birmingham crew
Crews we train in and around Birmingham: steel and metals, data centers, healthcare, distribution and food, utilities, public employers.
What the class covers for Birmingham crews
Steel plants run medium-voltage distribution, large transformers and furnace power systems under constant production pressure. The 2-Day Intensive spends real time on high incident energy and stored energy.
A campus with four substations means utility-class switching on private property during construction. We teach who controls each energy source and how switching orders and clearances work.
Transfer switches, generators and life-safety branches cannot just be shut off. We cover planning de-energized work in a building that never closes.
Birmingham, Jefferson County and school system workers have no OSHA coverage because Alabama has no state plan. A written NFPA 70E program is what protects them.

Alabama: what applies to your crews in Birmingham
Enforcement: federal OSHA
Alabama has no OSHA state plan. Federal OSHA's Birmingham area office is one of two in the state. Employees of Birmingham, Jefferson County and the state are outside OSHA coverage.
Licensing: Electrical Contractors Board
The Alabama Electrical Contractors Board in Montgomery licenses electrical contractors and journeyman electricians statewide, with exams and continuing education tied to renewal.
Where NFPA 70E fits
Although OSHA does not enforce NFPA 70E, Birmingham employers use it to demonstrate how they meet 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and the General Duty Clause lets OSHA cite recognized hazards a specific rule does not cover.
Birmingham's electrical work environment
Metals are still the backbone of western Jefferson County. U.S. Steel spent $412 million on an electric arc furnace, gas cleaning plant and rounds caster at Fairfield that started melting in late 2020. Nucor Steel Birmingham, CMC Steel Alabama, American Cast Iron Pipe, U.S. Pipe and McWane all run furnaces, mills and foundries within a short drive of downtown.
Bessemer is where the newest load is landing. In November 2025 the city council voted 5 to 2 to rezone about 700 acres off Rock Mountain Lake Road for Project Marvel, a $14 billion, 18-building campus from Logistic Land Investment. An updated 2026 plan expanded the footprint to 1,600 acres and set aside room for four substations. Downtown, DC BLOX has added a high-performance computing hall and has more than 50 MW of additional power available on its campus.
Healthcare and distribution employ the most people. UAB's hospitals and research buildings run large emergency power and switchgear systems with about 28,000 employees. Amazon's Bessemer fulfillment center has become the county's top industrial employer, and Smucker opened a 900,000 square foot Uncrustables plant in McCalla.
Steel mills, data centers and plants around Birmingham
These are the Jefferson County sites where electrical crews are busiest. The Bessemer campus is early and still moving through zoning.

Alabama Power at home in Birmingham
Alabama Power, a Southern Company subsidiary, is headquartered in Birmingham and serves about 1.4 million customers in the southern two-thirds of the state. Two of its largest plants sit near the city: Plant Miller in West Jefferson at 2,640 MW and Plant Gaston in Wilsonville at 1,880 MW.
Steel mills and data centers are among the biggest single loads a utility can connect. Arc furnaces swing hard on the grid, and a 1.2 GW campus needs its own substations and high-voltage ties. Crews on both projects work beside utility transmission equipment that follows 1910.269, while the customer-side gear falls under the general industry and construction rules.
