Electrical safety training in Bozeman, MT

Bozeman has grown faster than almost anywhere in Montana, and it carries a cluster of laser and optics manufacturers alongside an R1 research university. We train the electrical crews who keep those labs, plants and new buildings safe, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Bozeman when you ask.

Private employers in Montana are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Montana electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Bozeman crews

Lab and test equipment.

Laser systems, power supplies and capacitor banks bring shock and stored energy hazards that ordinary facility training misses. We cover research and development equipment and how to justify and plan energized test work.

Small manufacturers.

Many Bozeman optics firms have a handful of technicians and no dedicated electrical staff. We help build a written electrical safety program sized for a small shop.

Construction that turns energized.

Airport, campus and housing projects energize in phases. We cover how a site moves from 1926 construction rules to energized work rules and who owns each lockout.

Battery and DC systems.

Labs, data rooms and aircraft hangars increasingly use battery and DC systems. We cover the DC and battery hazards that sit next to the usual AC work.

Montana: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: federal OSHA

Bozeman's private employers fall under federal OSHA, administered from the Billings Area Office, since Montana has no state plan. Montana State University, the city and Gallatin County are public employers covered by the state Safety and Health Bureau instead of OSHA.

Licensing: State Electrical Board

Montana requires state licenses from the State Electrical Board for residential, journeyman and master electricians and electrical contractors. Lab technicians who service their own equipment usually hold no license, so the employer's qualification decision carries the weight.

Where NFPA 70E fits

NFPA 70E is not enforced by OSHA. Bozeman manufacturers and labs use it to show how they satisfy OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and OSHA can rely on the General Duty Clause for a recognized electrical hazard.

Bozeman's electrical work environment

Optics and photonics are Bozeman's signature industry, with more than 40 companies in the area. Bridger Photonics, founded here in 2006, builds LiDAR products for industrial metrology and methane detection. Montana Instruments, Lattice Materials and FLIR's Scientific Materials appear on Montana State University's list of Montana photonics companies. Lasers and test benches put high voltage power supplies and stored energy on the shop floor.

Montana State University is an R1 research university with $257.9 million in research spending in 2024 and 1,370 faculty. Bozeman Health is the largest private employer in Gallatin County with more than 2,800 people, and Oracle was ranked second in 2015. Software firms such as Workiva and onX share the valley with makers like Simms Fishing Products and Mystery Ranch.

Growth keeps electricians busy on construction. The city grew 43% from 2010 to 2020 and kept adding people after that. Bozeman Yellowstone International in Belgrade handled 2,809,419 passengers in 2025 and is in a $180 million expansion, and Bridger Aerospace runs the largest private Super Scooper firefighting fleet from Belgrade.

Power

NorthWestern Energy and a valley that keeps growing

NorthWestern Energy supplies electricity and gas across Bozeman, Belgrade and the rest of Gallatin County. The utility has had to build to keep up. When it planned a new Big Sky substation in 2018, it said growth in Big Sky's electrical needs since 2000 was nearly eight times the average across its service area.

For facility electricians, growth means a mix of brand new services and older buildings stretched past their original design. Labs and light manufacturers in Bozeman often add equipment faster than their arc flash studies are updated, so labels and one-line diagrams can fall behind the real system.

Questions from Bozeman employers

Our lab technicians are not electricians. Do they need NFPA 70E training?
If they work on or near exposed energized parts, such as open power supplies or test fixtures, they need training matched to that exposure. Our 1-Day class can be tailored to research equipment, and our 4-Hour Electrical Safety Awareness class covers staff who only work nearby.
We are a small optics company with ten people. Is onsite training practical?
Yes. A small group onsite works well, and a private live virtual class is another option. We can also help you write the electrical safety program a small company needs.
Can you train crews working on the airport expansion in Belgrade?
Yes. We cover 1926 Subpart K construction work and the change to energized work rules as new gear goes live, and we can run the class near the jobsite.
Is MSU covered by OSHA?
No. As a public employer, MSU falls under Montana's state public employer safety law, enforced by the Department of Labor and Industry. Private contractors working on campus are still under federal OSHA.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
