Electrical safety training in Jackson, MS

Metro Jackson became one of the South's busiest data center construction zones once Amazon committed billions to Madison County, and Entergy Mississippi is building new gas plants to keep up. We train the electrical crews on those campuses and in the region's plants, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Jackson when you ask.

Private employers in Mississippi are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Mississippi electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Jackson crews

Turning over live data halls.

Canton keeps adding buildings beside ones already in service. We teach the hand-off point where construction becomes energized equipment and an operations program takes over.

Generation and grid upgrades at once.

New combined-cycle plants and substation work are underway while the data centers ramp. Crews moving between utility and customer property need clear rules on switching, clearances and who controls the energy source.

Automotive downtime pressure.

Assembly and tire lines push maintenance to troubleshoot energized. We cover how to justify energized work in writing and when to say no.

Building qualification without a state license.

Mississippi has no statewide journeyman card, so many Jackson-area electricians arrive with no credential to verify. We give your program a documented training record to start from.

Mississippi: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: federal OSHA from Jackson

Mississippi has no state plan, and federal OSHA's Jackson area office covers the whole state. City, county and state agency employees in Jackson have no OSHA coverage at all.

Licensing: contractors, not individuals

Electrical contracting firms qualify for a Certificate of Responsibility from the Mississippi State Board of Contractors. Individual electricians are licensed only where a city or county chooses to do it.

Where NFPA 70E fits

OSHA does not enforce NFPA 70E, but employers rely on it to show how they meet 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K. When a recognized electrical hazard goes uncontrolled, OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause.

Jackson's electrical work environment

The Madison County data center build is the largest electrical construction program the Jackson area has seen. Amazon has five buildings running in Canton with plans to at least double that, and a second campus of similar size is in early construction in Ridgeland. In April 2026 the company added an $11 billion Madison County expansion to its 2024 commitment of at least $10 billion.

The work is spreading through the metro. In Clinton, Amazon is retrofitting the former Delphi auto parts plant into an air-cooled data center, a roughly $1 billion project marked with a ribbon cutting in June 2026. Clinton changed its zoning afterward so new data centers need a conditional use permit in industrial areas. A $3 billion Amazon campus is also in site preparation in Vicksburg, farther west along I-20.

Manufacturing keeps a large maintenance workforce busy. Nissan's Canton plant builds the Altima and Frontier with about 3,200 people, though Nissan dropped its plan to build EVs there in 2026. West of Clinton, Continental runs a truck and bus tire plant on a 1,000-acre site, a commitment of close to $1.4 billion.

Power

Entergy Mississippi and the new generation build

Entergy Mississippi serves about 459,000 customers in 45 counties, including Hinds, Madison and Rankin, and is the power provider for the Amazon campuses. Amazon says it pays the full cost of new energy infrastructure for its campuses, and Entergy plans $300 million in grid upgrades over five years. Amazon is also backing renewable projects totaling 616 MW.

Entergy is building its first new gas plants in decades to replace older steam units. Traceview in Ridgeland is due online in 2029, and two 754 MW plants are planned in Greenville and Vicksburg. For electrical crews, that means utility substations, new transmission ties and large customer switchyards energizing in stages around the metro for several years.

Questions from Jackson employers

Can you train contractors on the Madison County data center sites?
Yes. We set up classes near Canton or Ridgeland for subcontractor crews and can run several sessions so turnover dates are not affected.
Our electricians have no state license. Where do we start?
With training and documentation. Mississippi leaves individual qualification to the employer, so we give each participant a completion record and a competency check your program can build on.
We work for a city or state agency in Jackson. Does OSHA apply?
No. Mississippi has no state plan, so public employees are not covered. Adopting NFPA 70E by written policy and training to it is the practical way to protect those crews.
Can you cover both utility-side and customer-side work in one class?
Yes. We adjust examples for crews who move between substations, switchyards and premises equipment, and we flag where utility generation work follows 1910.269.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
