In-person · Joliet, ILElectrical safety training in Joliet, IL
Joliet puts a 275,000 barrel-a-day refinery, the country's largest inland port and a proposed 1.8 gigawatt data center campus within a few miles of each other in Will County. We train the electrical crews who keep those operations running, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Joliet when you ask.
Illinois runs a state plan for public employees only. Private employers are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Illinois electrical safety training requirements →

Four ways to train your Joliet crew
Crews we train in and around Joliet: refining, rail and intermodal, warehousing and distribution, data center construction, power generation, public agencies.
What the class covers for Joliet crews
Contract electricians arrive for outages at a site with its own cogeneration and medium-voltage distribution. We cover host and contractor responsibilities so both sides agree on who verifies absence of voltage and who owns the energized work permit.
Conveyor sortation, battery charging rooms and dock equipment in the CenterPoint warehouses put maintenance techs into 480 V panels every shift. The 1-Day class builds the habit of a risk assessment before the panel cover comes off.
A campus planned with a six-acre substation for every phase will energize in stages while construction continues. We teach the handoff from construction power to permanent, energized equipment and what changes for the crew on that day.
A city crew and a private contractor working the same Joliet street answer to different OSHA programs. We help both build written programs that hold up regardless of which inspector arrives.

Illinois: what applies to your crews
Enforcement: federal OSHA, plus IL OSHA
Private employers in Joliet fall under federal OSHA. Illinois runs a public-employee-only state plan, approved in 2009 and administered by IL OSHA within the Illinois Department of Labor, so city, county, school and water district crews are covered by the state.
Licensing: municipal
Illinois has no statewide journeyman or master electrician license, so licensing is set city by city. Joliet requires contractors to be licensed, insured and bonded in their trade, and since January 2023 each electrical contractor on a project must file a letter of intent.
Where NFPA 70E fits
OSHA does not enforce NFPA 70E. Employers use it to show how they meet the electrical requirements in OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause for a recognized electrical hazard.
Joliet's electrical work environment
Southwest of the city, ExxonMobil's Joliet Refinery covers 1,400 acres in unincorporated Channahon Township. Mobil started it up in August 1972, and today about 580 employees plus contractors turn crude into gasoline, diesel, asphalt, LPG, sulfur and petroleum coke, roughly 11 million gallons of fuel a day. The site runs its own cogeneration plant, so refinery electricians work on generation, distribution and process loads inside one fence line.
South of Interstate 80, the CenterPoint Intermodal Center links Joliet and Elwood across 6,400 acres. Union Pacific opened its 785-acre Joliet Intermodal Terminal there in 2010, and BNSF Logistics Park Chicago anchors the Elwood side. Around the rail yards, the Joliet site alone has 1,900 acres set aside for about 20 million square feet of industrial buildings, and Amazon was the city's largest employer by 2017 with about 3,500 workers.
The next wave is power-hungry. In March 2026 the City Council approved Hillwood and PowerHouse Data Centers' Joliet Technology Center, 24 two-story buildings on 795 acres near Rowell and Bernhard roads, each phase with its own six-acre substation. The city's industrial history still shows too. Caterpillar's Joliet plant, which once employed about 7,000 people, closed in June 2019.
Refining, rail and data centers along the I-55 and I-80 corridors
These are the Will County and Grundy County sites where electrical crews from Joliet spend most of their time. Several sit within a short drive of the I-55 and I-80 interchange.

ComEd and a grid built for heavy industry
ComEd serves Joliet and the Will County industrial base. The county's coal era is over. NRG's Will County Generating Station in Romeoville, a four-unit plant of about 1,269 MW, deactivated its last unit in June 2022. ComEd has also announced an expansion of its 1968 Wilton Center substation in Will County to connect up to 2,450 MW of new wind and solar.
Data center demand is changing the rules. On the same day Joliet approved its campus, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved larger study and infrastructure deposits for big data center loads, and ComEd said about 100 large-load projects totaling roughly 35,000 MW sit in its Illinois pipeline. For electricians, that means utility-class substations inside customer fences and a steady stream of new medium-voltage service.
