Electrical safety training in Manchester, NH

Manchester is New Hampshire's largest city, a former mill town whose Millyard now holds tech firms, a university campus and manufacturers. What the class covers for Manchester crews

Rebuilt mill buildings.

The Millyard's brick mills have been rewired many times over. Crews there find old and new distribution equipment side by side, with labels that may not match what is in the panel. We teach crews to verify before they trust a label.

High and medium voltage crews.

New Hampshire licenses high/medium voltage electricians as a separate class from master and journeyman. Those crews need training matched to the voltages they work on, and we cover approach boundaries and PPE planning at higher voltages.

Hospitals around the clock.

Elliot and Catholic Medical Center both operate every hour of the year. We cover how to plan maintenance on emergency power and how to document when energized work is justified.

Winter work.

A Manchester winter means generators, temporary heat and temporary power on construction sites. We cover the stored-energy and backfeed hazards that come with them.

New Hampshire: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: federal OSHA

New Hampshire does not run an OSHA state plan. Federal OSHA covers private employers in Manchester.

Licensing: state licenses for individuals

The New Hampshire Electricians' Board, part of the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification, licenses master, journeyman and high/medium voltage electricians. It registers apprentices and high/medium voltage trainees.

Where NFPA 70E fits

NFPA 70E is a consensus standard, not an OSHA regulation. Employers and inspectors use it to show how the electrical requirements in OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K are met, and OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause for recognized arc flash and shock hazards.

Manchester's electrical work environment

In the 1800s the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company ran the largest cotton textile plant in the world along the Merrimack River in Manchester. The company went bankrupt in 1935. Since the 1980s the Millyard has been rebuilt around DEKA, the University of New Hampshire at Manchester and a run of software companies.

Manufacturing never left. Velcro USA, Burndy and Summit Packaging are each among the city's ten largest employers, and their plant electricians keep production lines and distribution equipment running.

Health care is the biggest employer group. Elliot Hospital and Catholic Medical Center together employ about 6,900 people, the Manchester VA Medical Center adds more, and Southern New Hampshire University is the second-largest employer in the city.

Power

Eversource in New Hampshire

Eversource, formerly Public Service Company of New Hampshire, delivers electricity in Manchester. It is also one of the city's largest employers, with more than 1,100 people working here.

New Hampshire is part of the ISO New England grid. Most of the energized work your crews do happens on customer-owned equipment: hospital emergency power, plant switchgear and the distribution inside the Millyard buildings. That equipment, and the safety program for working on it, belongs to the owner.

Questions from Manchester employers

Do you have a scheduled class in Manchester?
Not on a fixed calendar. In-person classes in Manchester are set up on request. Tell us how many people you have and roughly when, and we will come back with a date and a written quote. If your group is large enough, the class runs at your own facility.
We are in Nashua or Concord. Will you come to us?
Yes. Onsite classes run at your facility anywhere in southern New Hampshire. Tell us the headcount and the dates that work, and we plan the class around your site.
Does a New Hampshire journeyman license make someone qualified under NFPA 70E?
Not by itself. The license shows a worker met the state's requirements for the trade. NFPA 70E qualification is specific to the equipment and tasks, and the employer has to train workers and document it. That record is what a federal OSHA inspector will ask for.
Can you train our high/medium voltage crew?
Yes. Tell us the voltages and equipment they work on and we tailor the class. Crews doing utility-type work also fall under OSHA 1910.269, and we cover how that fits with NFPA 70E.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
