Electrical safety training in Milwaukee, WI

Milwaukee builds the controls, drives and switchgear that run plants across the country, and southeast Wisconsin is now adding two of the largest AI data center campuses in the Midwest. We train the electricians who build and maintain all of it, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Milwaukee when you ask.

Private employers in Wisconsin are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Wisconsin electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Milwaukee crews

Licensed does not mean qualified.

Wisconsin licenses journeyman and industrial journeyman electricians, and that license covers installation knowledge. NFPA 70E qualification is a separate employer decision about specific equipment and tasks, and it has to be documented.

Plant maintenance on live equipment.

Troubleshooting a drive or a PLC panel with the doors open is daily work in Milwaukee plants. We teach how to decide when that work can be justified and what the energized work permit has to cover.

Data center construction crews.

Electricians coming off the Port Washington and Mount Pleasant jobs see switchgear energized in stages while other trades are still in the building. We cover how to establish and verify an electrically safe work condition when the gear changes state week to week.

Winter work.

Outdoor switchyards, substations and generator yards still get serviced in January. Cold, layered clothing and arc-rated PPE have to work together, and we cover what is and is not acceptable under the arc-rated layer.

Wisconsin: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: federal OSHA

Wisconsin has no OSHA state plan, so private employers in Milwaukee fall under federal OSHA through its Milwaukee Area Office. Public employers are covered separately under a state program run by the Department of Safety and Professional Services.

Licensing: statewide electrician licenses

Since April 2014 Wisconsin has required DSPS licenses for master, journeyman, industrial journeyman and residential electricians, plus registration for apprentices and beginning electricians. Electrical contractors need their own license.

Where NFPA 70E fits

NFPA 70E is a consensus standard. Employers and federal inspectors use it to show how the electrical requirements in OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K are met, and OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause for a recognized arc flash hazard.

Milwaukee's electrical work environment

Milwaukee is still a manufacturing city. Rockwell Automation is headquartered on the near south side, A. O. Smith and Harley-Davidson are based here, and the Miller brewery still operates in the city. Plants like these depend on maintenance electricians who work around motor control centers and drives every shift.

The region's newest work is north and south of the city. Vantage broke ground in Port Washington in December 2025 on a $15 billion, 902 MW campus for OpenAI and Oracle. In Racine County, Microsoft's first Fairwater data center in Mount Pleasant went live in June 2026. Many of the electricians on both jobs live in Milwaukee County.

The utility is local too. WEC Energy Group, parent of We Energies, is headquartered downtown.

Power

We Energies and new generation

We Energies serves Milwaukee and most of southeast Wisconsin. Its parent, WEC Energy Group, is one of the city's three Fortune 500 headquarters.

In response to data center load, the Public Service Commission approved a 1,100 MW natural gas plant at the Oak Creek generating site and a 128 MW reciprocating engine plant in Kenosha County, about $1.5 billion together. The Port Washington campus is getting its own on-site substation. New substations and generation mean more commissioning and switching work for Milwaukee-area utility and contractor crews.

Questions from Milwaukee employers

Do you have a scheduled class in Milwaukee?
Not on a fixed calendar. In-person classes in Milwaukee are set up on request. Tell us how many people you have and roughly when, and we will come back with a date and a written quote. If your group is large enough, the class runs at your own facility.
Our people already hold Wisconsin electrician licenses. Why do they need NFPA 70E training?
A license shows they know how to install equipment to code. NFPA 70E training covers how to work safely on or near energized equipment, and the employer has to train and document each worker as qualified for the tasks they do. Licensed electricians still need that training and record.
Can you train a crew working on the Port Washington or Mount Pleasant data center jobs?
Yes. We schedule around your shift and the site's badging and escort rules. Tell us where the crew is working and we will set up the class at your shop or near the site.
Can a class include our maintenance techs who are not licensed electricians?
Yes. Many plant technicians do limited electrical tasks, such as resetting breakers or troubleshooting controls. We cover what makes someone qualified for a specific task and how unqualified workers stay out of the shock and arc flash boundaries.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
