Electrical safety training in Richmond, VA

Richmond became the fastest-growing data center market in the country in 2025, with Meta, QTS and Google all building in Henrico and Chesterfield. We train the crews who build and run those campuses, and the plants and utility work around them, at your site or in an in-person class we set up in Richmond.

Virginia runs its own OSHA-approved state plan. Private employers here are inspected by Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH), Virginia Department of Labor and Industry; standards adopted by the Virginia Safety and Health Codes Board, not federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Virginia electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Richmond crews

Building beside a live phase.

Central Virginia campuses energize in phases, sometimes years apart. The crew that built the first building comes back for the second, and now the first one is running. We train for that switch from job site to operating facility.

New to mission critical.

Electricians crossing over from commercial and industrial work meet UPS systems, battery rooms and stored energy that stays present after gear is switched off. We cover those hazards from the ground up.

Licensed is not the same as qualified.

Virginia's DPOR journeyman and master cards prove code knowledge. NFPA 70E qualification is the employer's decision, and it needs training and documentation for each worker.

Plant and utility work.

Chemical, manufacturing and utility sites around Richmond carry medium-voltage distribution and process equipment. We build examples around the equipment your crews actually maintain.

Virginia: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: VOSH

VOSH is run from Richmond by the Department of Labor and Industry and enforces Virginia's state plan. It covers private employers and state and local government, including the state agencies based in the capital.

Licensing: statewide tradesman licenses

Virginia requires DPOR journeyman and master electrician licenses, with work performed under a licensed electrical contractor. Continuing education is 3 hours per two-year term and covers the code, not energized work practices.

Where NFPA 70E fits

NFPA 70E is not written into OSHA rules. Employers and inspectors use it as the consensus standard showing how OSHA 1910 Subpart S, 1926 Subpart K and, for utility work, 1910.269 requirements are met.

Richmond's electrical work environment

Richmond is Virginia's capital and the headquarters city for Dominion Energy and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Capital One runs a large operations center in the region, DuPont operates its Spruance Plant in South Richmond, and Philip Morris USA is one of the area's largest private employers.

The data center build sits just outside the city. Meta's campus at White Oak Technology Park in Henrico brought its first phase online in August 2020 and finished in 2023. QTS turned the former Qimonda chip plant in Sandston into a data center campus. In Chesterfield, Google is developing about 300 acres on Bermuda Hundred Road near Meadowville Technology Park.

Growth this fast pulls a lot of electricians into mission critical work for the first time. Many come from commercial and industrial jobs. Their first shift beside an operating data hall is usually the first time they work around gear that nobody is allowed to shut off.

Power

Dominion Energy Virginia

Dominion Energy Virginia serves Richmond and the surrounding data center counties, and the company is headquartered downtown. Interconnection timing, more than land, decides when a Central Virginia campus can energize, which is why buildings come online in stages.

In November 2025 the State Corporation Commission approved the Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center, a new gas plant, along with a new rate class for high-load customers such as data centers (Virginia Mercury). Dominion is also building new high-voltage lines for large Chesterfield projects. Each new substation and line adds switching work and utility boundaries that contractors have to respect.

Questions from Richmond employers

Do you have a scheduled class in Richmond?
Not on a fixed calendar. In-person classes in Richmond are set up on request. Tell us how many people you have and roughly when, and we will come back with a date and a written quote. If your group is large enough, the class runs at your own facility.
Can you train our crew at a Henrico or Chesterfield campus during construction?
Yes. Tell us the site's badging and escort rules and the shift pattern. We schedule around commissioning milestones so the class does not collide with energization.
Our electricians are new to data centers. Which class should they take?
Start with the 1-Day QEW class for anyone who will work on or near energized gear. Crews responsible for UPS, DC systems and batteries get more from the 2-Day Intensive.
Can non-electricians attend?
Yes. Laborers, equipment operators and other trades on a data center site need to recognize electrical hazards. Our 4-Hour Electrical Safety Awareness class is built for workers who are not qualified but work near them.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
