In-person · Toledo, OHElectrical safety training in Toledo, OH
Toledo builds every Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, refines crude in Oregon, makes iron briquettes on the east side and sits a short drive from a Lake Erie nuclear plant and the first factory First Solar ever built. We train the electrical crews who keep those plants running, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Toledo when you ask.
Private employers in Ohio are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Ohio electrical safety training requirements →

Four ways to train your Toledo crew
Crews we train in and around Toledo: automotive, refining, primary metals, solar manufacturing, nuclear, glass and building products.
What the class covers for Toledo crews
A stopped line at a vehicle plant gets immediate attention, and electricians feel it. We teach how to separate diagnostic testing from energized repair and how to make the justification for energized work explicit.
Refinery motor control centers, heaters and analyzers sit in classified areas where an arc can ignite more than clothing. Classes tie electrical isolation and arc flash boundaries to the unit's process hazards and permit system.
Direct reduction furnaces and solar module lines run continuous processes with large drives and rectifiers. We cover stored energy in capacitors and drives and the verification steps before hands go into an enclosure.
Davis-Besse refueling outages and refinery turnarounds bring traveling electricians from many employers onto one site. We explain host and contract employer duties so hazard information actually reaches the people opening the gear.

Ohio: what applies to your crews in Toledo
Enforcement: federal OSHA; PERRP for the public sector
Private employers in Lucas and Wood counties are inspected by federal OSHA, which has an area office in Toledo. Ohio is not an OSHA-approved state plan state, so city, county and school district workers are covered instead by PERRP under Ohio Revised Code 4167.
Licensing: OCILB contractors, Toledo journeymen
Electrical contractors need a license from the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board. Toledo also requires a journeyman license through its Division of Building Inspection, based on four years or 8,000 hours of experience or an approved apprenticeship.
Where NFPA 70E fits
NFPA 70E is not an OSHA-enforced rule. Toledo plants use it as the method for meeting OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and OSHA can still cite the General Duty Clause for an arc flash or shock hazard the industry recognizes.
Toledo's electrical work environment
Stellantis' Toledo Assembly Complex covers 312 acres and about 3.64 million square feet, building the Jeep Wrangler since 1993 and the Gladiator since 2020. General Motors has made transmissions in the city since 1916, and the metro is home to Dana, Owens Corning, Owens-Illinois and The Andersons. Body shops, paint shops and powertrain lines mean robotics, servo drives and plant distribution that maintenance electricians troubleshoot between production runs.
East of the Maumee, the Toledo refinery in Oregon is now owned by Cenovus through Ohio Refining Company, after the company bought BP's half in 2022 and closed the deal in February 2023. A naphtha release and flash fire there on September 20, 2022 killed two employees who were brothers, and the CSB found more than 3,700 alarms had flooded operators in the prior 12 hours. Nearby, Cleveland-Cliffs' $700 million hot-briquetted iron plant began producing in 2020.
Energy work rings the city. First Solar began commercial production in Perrysburg in 2002 and now runs three Ohio factories, where module lines depend on tightly controlled process power. Out on the Lake Erie shore, Vistra's Davis-Besse plant in Carroll Township runs an 894 MW reactor, the same unit that sat shut for two years after corrosion was found in its vessel head in 2002.
Plants, refineries and power along the Maumee
These industrial and energy sites account for much of the electrical maintenance and contract work in the Toledo area.
| Site | What is there | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Toledo Assembly Complex Stellantis | 312-acre complex building the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator with about 6,000 employees. | Operating |
| Toledo refinery Cenovus (Ohio Refining Company) | Oregon, Ohio refinery fully owned by Cenovus since February 2023, site of the fatal 2022 naphtha fire. | Operating |
| Toledo HBI plant Cleveland-Cliffs | $700 million hot-briquetted iron plant in East Toledo, completed in 2020. | Operating |
| Toledo Transmission General Motors | Transmission plant operating in the city since 1916. | Operating |
| Perrysburg manufacturing First Solar | The company's first plant, producing commercially since 2002, now one of three First Solar factories in Ohio. | Operating |
| Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station Vistra | 894 MW single-unit plant on Lake Erie in Carroll Township, Ottawa County. | Operating |
Toledo Edison and the Lake Erie generation corridor
Toledo Edison delivers power in Toledo and much of northwest Ohio. It joined The Illuminating Company under Centerior Energy in 1986 and became part of FirstEnergy when Centerior merged with Ohio Edison in 1997. Large plants like the Jeep complex, the refinery and the HBI plant take service at transmission or subtransmission voltage and own substantial switchyards behind the meter.
The lakeshore also generates. Davis-Besse sits roughly 10 miles north of Oak Harbor, and Fermi 2 is just across the Michigan line near Monroe. For your crews, the hazard is usually in customer-owned switchgear and plant distribution, where available fault current is high and labels must be kept current as systems change.
