Electrical safety training in Wichita, KS

Wichita builds airplanes, from 737 fuselages to Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft, and its two biggest employers are aircraft makers. We train the electrical crews who keep those plants and their suppliers running, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Wichita when you ask.

Private employers in Kansas are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Kansas electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Wichita crews

Production lines that cannot stop.

When a fuselage line or final assembly is running to schedule, the pressure to troubleshoot energized is real. We teach the justification test for energized work and how to plan the job so it is rarely needed.

Specialty plant equipment.

Aerospace plants concentrate large drives, cranes and test equipment. The 2-Day Intensive spends time on these specialty systems and the stored energy they carry.

Supplier shops with small maintenance teams.

A supplier with two maintenance techs often has no written electrical safety program. We help build one that fits a small shop and still covers risk assessment, PPE and lockout.

No state license as a backstop.

Kansas has no statewide electrician license, so outside Wichita and Sedgwick County there may be no third-party credential at all. Your documented qualification decision carries the full weight.

Kansas: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: federal OSHA

Kansas has no state plan. Private employers are covered by federal OSHA's single Kansas area office in Wichita, under Region 7. Public employers are not covered by OSHA; the Kansas Department of Labor's Industrial Safety and Health Division evaluates them, but it does not issue citations or penalties.

Licensing: local

Kansas has no statewide electrician license. In Wichita and Sedgwick County, the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department issues journeyman and master electrician certificates based on approved ICC exams and documented field experience.

Where NFPA 70E fits

OSHA does not enforce NFPA 70E. Employers use it to show how they meet the electrical requirements in OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause for a recognized electrical hazard.

Wichita's electrical work environment

Boeing closed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems in December 2025, bringing the Wichita plant that builds 737 fuselages and major structures for the 767, 777 and 787 back in house. Textron Aviation builds Cessna and Beechcraft aircraft across town, and the two companies together employ roughly 18,500 or more people locally. Airframe production at that scale means plant electricians work on heavy industrial equipment every shift.

More than 450 aerospace suppliers sit around them, from LMI Aerospace to Collins Aerospace. Wichita State's National Institute for Aviation Research employs about 1,400 people in composites, wind tunnel and simulation work, and Airbus has run its Americas Engineering Center on the university's Innovation Campus since 2017. McConnell Air Force Base flies the KC-46 tanker.

Outside aviation, Koch Industries keeps its headquarters here with more than 3,000 local employees, and Cargill Protein employs more than 1,000. Occidental Chemical runs a Wichita chemical plant, and Ascension Via Christi's hospitals carry their own emergency power systems. Data centers are on hold for now. Sedgwick County paused data center applications in January 2026 and extended the moratorium to September 11 while it writes zoning rules, after opposition to a proposal near Colwich.

These are the employers and projects where Wichita electrical crews do most of their work. Aviation dominates, but chemical, food and power sites are close behind.

Power

Evergy Kansas Central and new gas generation

Evergy Kansas Central serves about 735,000 customers, including Wichita, Hutchinson, Newton, El Dorado and Arkansas City. In Sedgwick County, Evergy runs the Gordon Evans Energy Center near Colwich and the Murray Gill plant, while plant crews at large industrial customers maintain their own substations and distribution.

In July 2025 the Kansas Corporation Commission approved two new 710 MW combined cycle plants, Viola in Sumner County and McNew in Reno County, along with the Kansas Sky solar project. Viola is expected online in 2029. Building them brings large switchyards and medium-voltage work within commuting distance of Wichita for the rest of the decade.

Questions from Wichita employers

Can you train our crew without stopping the production line?
Yes. We can split a group across shifts or days so the line keeps running. Tell us the headcount and shift pattern and we will propose a schedule.
Our electricians hold MABCD certificates. Does that make them qualified?
No. A Wichita or Sedgwick County certificate shows installation knowledge under the code. NFPA 70E qualification is the employer's decision, based on documented training in the hazards and safe work practices for each task.
We are a Kansas city government. Does OSHA apply to us?
No. Kansas has no state plan, so OSHA does not cover public employers. The Kansas Department of Labor may evaluate your workplace, but a written NFPA 70E program is what actually protects your electricians.
We are a small aerospace supplier. Is onsite training practical for us?
Yes, if you have enough people. Smaller groups can join an in-person class we set up in Wichita or our monthly open virtual class.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
